Carbine Buffer: 3.0oz (3 Steel weights)

A carbine buffer is the lightest standardized configuration for a buffer assembly and is very common to see among the lower costing AR's on the market. That is because they are the cheapest and lightest option for the manufacturer to use and ensure that the system will function with cheaper, less potent ammunition. There are a handful of problems.

The system will violent more violently, increasing recoil & parts ware

(The AR-15 needs a certain amount of weight in the operating system to function properly and reliably. Going as long as a carbine buffer takes away needed weight and will reduce the systems potential energy and ability to function in adverse conditions such as fouling or debris. Generally, carbine buffers are advised against for a general purpose or hard use system, only being recommended for systems with adjustable gas that seek to be as light as possible and recoil as gently as possible such as competition rifles or if the end user is comfortable with cutting weight at the cost of reliability, recoil and parts longevity.

H-1 Buffer: 3.8oz (2 Steel weights, 1 Tungsten weight)

An H1 Buffer introduces additional weight that is generally ideal for properly combat gassed (SLIGHTLY over gassed systems to ensure proper function in adverse conditions) with mid-length gas systems, barrels between 13.9"-18" that will remain mostly unsupressed.

H-2 Buffer: 4.6oz (1 Steel weight, 2 Tungsten weights)

H2- Buffers additional weight is ideal for systems with shorter barrels (<14.5") that either have carbine length gas systems, see a moderate amount of suppressor use, experience full power loadings such a modern mil-spec ammunition or a combination of all of the above. The M4A1 has an H2 Buffer in it as it is a 14.5" Barrel that exclusively is firing modern higher pressure mil-spec ammo (M855 or M855A1)

H-3 Buffer: 5.4oz (3 Tungsten weights)

The heaviest standard buffer option and generally used in short and or suppressed systems (<12.5" barrel). The added weight helps delay the cycling of the system which is desirable for shorter barrels especially with the addition of a suppressor that adds back pressure to the system.

**These guidelines are GENERAL GUIDELINES, how your particular gas system is gassed (IE gas port size) ammunition used, and buffer spring chosen (If not a standard carbine spring) can all effect how your system operates. If you stick to quality parts and standard practices the info above and guide image should be generally accurate.
